M.A.D.EDITIONS
In June 2021, MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser presented a timepiece called the M.A.D.1: not an MB&F Machine but a more accessible timepiece developed under a different brand, M.A.D.Editions, linking it to the mechanical art universe that has been created with the M.A.D.Galleries.
Maximilian Büsser loves creating MB&F’s insane mechanical timepieces, as complex as they are limited. Nonetheless, Max had been playing with a side project for several years: creating a more accessible timepiece, under another label, but always with the crazy MB&F touch. The result is the “M.A.D.1”.
Meet the M.A.D.1S
Slimmer, Single cylinder, and Swiss made movement
The idea behind the M.A.D.Editions was born out of a certain frustration that not everyone could afford an MB&F timepiece, not even Maximilian Büsser’s own family or friends – The treasured Fs in the name MB&F – who have all played major roles in the success of the brand. The timepiece would be as creative as everything else MB&F had developed, only at an affordable price. This meant, that it wouldn’t be possible to put the MB&F name on it. To keep the price accessible, the engineering, complexity and finishing would obviously not be in the same league as MB&F’s horological machines, so a new brand name had to be found.
The original M.A.D.1 launched in 2021 was recognisable thanks to its blue highlights; it was proposed exclusively to MB&F’s suppliers, “the Friends”, and to the members of “The Tribe”, the brand’s owners club. However, the general feedback to the M.A.D.1 was so overwhelmingly positive that Maximilian Büsser promised a follow-up version in 2022, available this time to a wider audience. The result was the M.A.D.1 RED.
In 2023, the M.A.D.1 GREEN joined M.A.D.Editions’ colourful series.
In spring of 2024, Legendary French artist and designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (JCC) turned his hand to watchmaking, becoming the first creator to collaborate on a M.A.D.1.
Following-up with a second launch for the year, the M.A.D.Editions team introduces the M.A.D.1S. You’ll notice the addition of the letter S, which isn’t just for the sake of generating another reference number, but a slimmer, single cylinder, and Swiss made movement offering. Debuting its first ever Swiss made movement in the series, the M.A.D.1S now plays host to an automatic La Joux-Perret G101 movement, beating at a frequency of 28,800 bph/4 Hz with a power reserve of 68 hours. Housed in a Stainless Steel 316L case, at 42mm x 15mm, it showcases an alternative movement proposition in the line-up. Rather than repeat the story of its predecessors, the M.A.D.1S offers something different, turning the page on a new chapter.
